Art of Nature Journeys: Floral Retreats

I was first charmed by the beauty of Chiang Mai almost ten years ago when I was there to cover a travel story on the new pool suites of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel (now The Dhava Dhevi Hotel). So I anchored my first creative retreat in Feb of 2017, titled "Floral Retreats", in partnerships with the talented Nalin of Forestbake , 137 Pillars House and Queen Sirikit Botanic Gardens (QSBG) to create an experiential creative journey imbued with the rich ethno-botanical history and culture of the land, the ubiquitous Thailand hospitality, cool weather,  ultra-luxurious setting of the hotel and to treat my guests to the famous cuisines of Northern Thailand everyday. Nalin, the founder, gave us a photo-styling workshop, and I held one of the workshop at her beautiful space. Check out her instagram and you'll see why I love her space and her work so much. We brought back fresh seasonal cut flowers at the famous Chiang Mai flower market to paint everyday and were given VIP access and tours of gardens by the staff of QSBG comprised of the ex-director, chief conservationist and botanists who shared their knowledge of the plants and love for the land. On the last day of the retreat, when I was gifted the latest research book by QSBG titled, "The Edible flowers of Northern Thailand", I knew that mother nature had invited us back once again to experience her wonders there.

Gratitude to our generous sponsors: Lotus Wei, Faber-Castell Singapore, Vanderohe, Summerhouse and Forest Bake.

Art of Nature Journeys: The Creative Retreat of Edible Flowers

In the first few months of starting Within, I'd a very strong feeling that I would be working with edible flowers one day. 9 months later, when I was gifted the book on "The Edible Flowers of Northern Thailand" on the last day of my first creative retreat, I was thankful to be able to design and conduct my second creative retreat during the rainy season in Chiang Mai to witness the abundant blooms of flowers in the gardens. During the five days of the retreat, our ten guests were treated to two private tours, with a special VIP tented space for us to dine the specially-created edible flower dishes created by the staff of Queen Sirikit Botanic Gardens (QSBG). They cut and gifted us spectacular bouquets of Zingiberaceae blooms to bring back to our luxurious hotel to paint. I gifted my guests with colourful curcumas, hand-painted greeting day notes, lotus quotes to sum up our day, nightly turn-down gifts and passages to read, gifts from our sponsors. I designed a creative programme anchored by a theme each day, filled with art and writing exercises to enable everyone to develop their creative confidence and ultimately to connect themselves and with the lush nature around us.

Gratitude to our generous sponsors: PIN TEA, Marmonde and Faber-Castell Singapore.
